You might be surprised to know the primary reason most people choose indoor tanning is to relax. For many of our clients, the 15-minute sessions they stop in for are the only 15 minutes they have to relax during the week. Of course, you can maintain that rich, golden look people find attractive year-round too.
If you haven’t tanned indoors before, there are certain things you can do to maximize your enjoyment and achieve better results.
Before you start tanning, or if you’re new to it entirely, you might have a few questions:
How quickly will I see results?
This is a difficult question to answer specifically. Much of the length of time it takes to get a good tan involves the tone of your skin. If you have naturally pale skin, the process takes longer before you have a noticeable effect. If your skin tone is a little darker, you will see results more quickly.
Also, make sure you use good tanning lotion – one of our consultants can help you identify the right product for your skin. To answer the question generally, however, you will experience results after a few sessions.
Should I tan?
Whether you tan or not is your own choice. What you do with your body is up to you. Some people, however, also wonder whether or not tanning is safe.
If you are just getting your first tan at a salon, make sure you limit the length and number of your sessions at first. Our consultants can help you identify the appropriate time period to tan and the right type of lotion to use.
When you tan, keep in mind you receive a number of benefits from increased vitamin D production, such as a reduced frequency of cardiovascular disease, infections, autoimmune disorders, kidney problems, neurological diseases, and diabetes.
How often can I tan?
You can tan as often as you’d like, but this isn’t recommended over the long term. However, for best results, you should tan more frequently initially to build up your tan, and then reduce your number of sessions to maintain your tan. When used on an occasional basis, UV sunbeds stimulate production of vitamin D. You should allow 24-48 hours between each session, and make sure you start off with low-intensity beds at first.

Can I tan while I'm pregnant?
Yes you can, but you should avoid using a bed. There’s no conclusive proof that tanning harms an unborn child, but there is speculation it does. If you are concerned about the safety of your unborn child, you can use spray tanning or airbrush tanning, which only colors your skin, giving you the appearance of having a tan.
Why is it required that I wear eyewear?
Your eyelids simply do not protect your eyes from UV rays. Your eyelids do provide some level of protection, but most of the UV rays do get through. If you don’t wear goggles, you can experience puffy eyelids, red/itchy eyes, uncontrollable watering, and possibly sunburn. Goggles prevent all of this damage from happening.
Can I use tanning beds and spray tan together?
You can, but the results are most effective if you use one do one of the following: 1. Tan in a bed before your spray session which will help open your pores for better absorporption or 2. Use a stand-up after your spray session which helps dry your spray.
Is it true I need to burn first before I will start to tan?
This is not the case. The number one rule of tanning is to never get sunburned. Not only does the resulting look you have make you appear unattractive, but multiple sunburns are a precursor to serious health conditions such as skin cancer. They’re also very painful to have.
How do I eliminate white marks on my lower back/shoulder blades and tan lines under my arms?
White marks present on your skin, even after tanning, may be caused by a number of different factors:
- Low levels of melanin in your skin
- Tinea versicolor (a skin condition caused by a fungal infection)
- Vitiligo – a skin condition where too little melanin is produced as a result of overexposure to the sun
- Medications – Some prescription medications make your skin more sensitive to UV rays (for example birth control pills)
- Overactive sweat glands
- Pressure points, which are caused by people who love tanning regularly. Circulation to these points decreases, creating the resulting white spots.
You can treat these conditions that cause unattractive skin conditions by:
- Consuming over-the-counter anti-fungal creams and ointments
- Using proper personal hygiene
- Keeping your skin dry while tanning
- Using the appropriate tanning lotion (ask one of our consultants for a recommendation)
- Staying hydrated, which helps remove the white marks
- Eating fruits and vegetables to protect your skin from infections and disorders
- Keeping your skin moisturized with the appropriate lotion or massage oil
- Tanning in moderation
- Using oral medications (only in severe cases)
